What is "Go for it"?

About "Go for it"

"Go for it" is a friendship club that was started in 2011. It tries to help people with learning difficulties in the Harrogate area to:

  • Have more social and leisure choices.
  • Make new friends and keep in touch with other people.
  • Find out what's going on in the Harrogate area that you might be interested in.
  • Spend time together joining in fun, healthy activities.
  • Put you in control of your social life and leisure time.
  • Save money by sharing support, transport and other costs.

"Go for it" organises social get togethers where all members and supporters are welcome to attend. They take place 4 times every year. They give you a chance to meet new people, make future plans and find out about the interests that other people have.

Social Networking

Now "Go for it" has set up a website. This should make it even easier to get in touch with other people and share interests with them.

"Go for it online" website is a free, members-only website. Only people with learning difficulties in the Harrogate area and people who support and care for them can join.

It is called a secure social networking website. This means it is a safe way of contacting and getting to know other people.

If you join, you will be able more easily to:

  • Safely contact your friends, family, support staff and service providers.
  • Make new friends who live near you and find out about old ones.
  • Meet people who share the same interests and activities.
  • Swap ideas and experiences with other members.

When you have become an online member you can let other online members know more about you – such as what interests you have and what you like to do.

You will also be able to search online for people you would like to become friends with. You can send messages to them and share photos and videos with each other.

You will also find a list of interest groups and clubs on the website. Some examples of these include; Leeds Rhinos supporters club, Come Dine With Me, a football fan club a walking group and lots more.

You will be able to search online for more information about the clubs and interest groups you think you might like to join.

If you want to you can also help to write an online newsletter every month. This will tell people about the events and activities that have taken place that month.

Events & Activities

If you find any group or club that interests you, you can apply online to join them. You may also choose to start your own interest group which other people can then apply to join. If you want us to, we can help your group organise activities. And we could help arrange transport and support if needed.

Open-to-all meetings:

We often have "Go for it online" meetings which all people with learning difficulties and their support workers or carers are welcome to attend. These meetings will help people to:

  • Use computers and learn how to use the "Go for it online" website.
  • Use the internet safely.
  • Find out about things on the internet.

There is no charge and tea and coffee are provided.

Go for it social events:

"Go for it" organises regular social events for members. Details of our "Go for it" events such as computer-help meetings and social events will be shown on the "Go for it online" website. We will also list any coming events in our monthly newsletter.

Online Safety Matters

The website is checked out all the time by people called Administrators. They ensure that only members of "Go for it" can use the network.

When the Administrators are happy that you are who you say are you can start to use our network. You will be able to contact other members.

You can then tell other members about yourself. You can tell them as much or as little about yourself as you want.

You will also be able to look for clubs and activities that you might like to take part in.

Yours and other member's addresses are never given away. These are kept private at all times.

We have also got a 'How to stay safe' group on our website. This helps you find out what is suitable and not suitable to tell other people online. It also gives you other useful advice on using the internet safely.

You will be able to chat and send messages to other members who you become friends with. If the friendship ends, you can choose to take that person off your "friends list". This means that they will not be able to contact you online any more.
